Opening:05/24/2024 17:00 (Fri)
Duration:05/24 - 05/24/2024

Doors are opening and floors are creaking; at this year’s Open House, the whole house really comes alive! As part of the festival program, performances reflecting on the theme of zymurgy will explore the duality of natural processes. The four performances delve into the dichotomies of body and space, inside and outside, beginning and end, reality and imagination, and aim to synthesize these extremes with a liberating force. By invoking cryptic creatures and figures from the spirit world, they invite us to immerse ourselves in a realm beyond reality. Come and join the fermentation process to experience the noble coexistence of destructive nature and creative force.

Kristóf Kelemen: Necromancy

Time traveling allows us not only to look into the mirror of our past, but to face our contemporary problems. Necromancy is about subversive imagination and alternate realities, realized as an immersive VR-journey through time and space which blends the genre of theatre and 360° film as a hybrid performance.
Fifty years ago, the Hungarian state tried to take control of the art scene. Many artists were banned and forced into hiding, but local neo-avant-garde movements found shelter in a small chapel in Balatonboglár. In the seventies these young people wanted to dream up an alternate reality for themselves through artistic work. In this key meeting place a famous independent theatre group (later Squat Theatre) presented a subversive and liberating performance based on the movie of King Kong with an early queer reference: the main male actor stepped out of the confines of his body and became a beautiful woman. They escaped the perceived reality and played with their gender identities.
For how long is it possible to create a separate universe under a dictatorship? If we must leave our home country as refugees, can we connect to other cultures?
Necromancy summons the ghosts and gives them a voice to tell us about radical freedom. In a 30-minute long mystical séance visitors can make contact with these hiding spirits of different places, not only through listening and seeing, but also touching and smelling. We invite our audience on an immersive journey spanning across continents following the traces of Squat Theatre from Budapest to New York, through missing venues, apartments and archives. Join us in a poetic attempt at remembering together and overcoming the limits of materiality.
Necromancy was an official research project and documentary performance of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture programme.

Imre Vass: Reading the room

I picture myself in an empty studio. I am heavily leaning on the given conditions. I am counting the walls and I am putting my hands on the periphery. From there I am making a difference, I am connecting the dots, I am framing the experience. At least these are the things that I keep telling myself. I am listening, I am all ears. I am seeing things, but not in the visual sense. I am finding myself in an awkward position. I found what I was looking for. I am stepping over the threshold and I sustain myself in this position. I bow down in front of this practice. I am hanging on the receiving end. I am paying the price of avoiding making sense. It is time to put myself out there.

Gergő Farkas: baby

A baby is a body with obscure organs. These organs have no names or vital functions, and you can absolutely survive without them. Their by-products are dances, sounds, objects and poems: substances in contact as lovers. Through a strategy of worlding that transcends the boundaries of the body, Baby aims to create a space that is a little too sensual, in which the material and the fantastic synthesise.

Zsófia Tamara Vadas, Áron Porteleki: Crater -before begin-

Crater instant performance explores the concept of loss and new beginnings from the invisible to the visible. Transformations of the processes of ecstasy, agonisation and letting go.
An intense alternation of physical realizations of concrete and abstract processes, linked to the embodiment of our emotions. "the cellar is first and foremost the dark being of the house, a being in pact with the subterranean powers. When we dream of it, we enter into an alliance with the irrationality of the abyss."
