Woohyun Shim(Born 1987) is an artist, who majorly focuses on painting.
She had her BFA in School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and MFA in University of Pennsylvania in
Philadelphi, USA.
Her work has been deeply influenced by Asian ancient philosophy of Zhuangzi, which is Unity of ego and the
outside world (=物化). In her work, the thesis is connected to the painterly sense of selflessness and to blur
every boundary such as in between real and surreal, animal and human world, the past and the future and
etc.
The energy that is created by connecting opposite poles such as in between naivety or chastity and erotic or
sexual imagery, male totem and female totem, destruction and construction become driving force in her
work process. These are reflected with the background as wilderness, and they are in the realm in between
imagination and reality. With the flow of paint, mythical elements, sexual elements from myths and naïve
imagination from her childhood memories are all mingled on canvas and creates its own realm.
