The image is inseparable from the medium that created it. It is of great importance whether a work appears before us in the form of a print, an offset print, an oil painting, or a photograph. This is not merely significant from the perspective of image quality, as contemporary fine art readily incorporates the internal logic of various image-making possibilities into the work as an organic part. Éva Köves also strives to exploit the logic of image-making throughout her entire oeuvre, initially in her creations that merge the media of analog photography and painting, and later in the form of digital prints mounted on canvas. The motifs that appear in her painting installations are not narrative or descriptive, even in the case of figurative object ensembles. Her works rather reflect on the phenomena of "visual noise" in everyday life. Instead of storytelling, she collects fragments of our collective reality in her images, which are always supplemented by the gesture of overpainting.
The act of rewriting or "writing apart" with oil paint results in a peculiar transition and translucency in her images. This transparency, keeping the eye in constant motion, uniquely doubles the spatial structure of her works. By doubling the experience of space, the artist divides the process of seeing into two poles, making the parallel presence of the personal and the collective "gaze" visible on the canvas.
