Please join us for meetings and discussions following the Artist Residencies of Benoît Billotte and Ashley Catharine Smith at AQB - Art Quarter Budapest.

After several weeks of immersing themselves in the city of Budapest as well as its artistic and cultural scene, these two artists are pleased to invite you to share in the research and work they have undertaken this summer.

Benoît Billotte (1983 – France) lives and works in Geneva. His practice explores various printing techniques on paper and fabric using natural resources such as dye plants. He explores the concept of territory through its specific characteristics—architecture, craftsmanship, flora, and cultural identity—to create installations that encourage observation and wandering.

His residency in Budapest has allowed him to study the city’s diverse architectural styles as well as its textile traditions featuring botanical motifs. Through sewing and assemblage, he freely reinterprets architectural details while exploring references to Constructivism and the Hungarian avant-garde. His residency is supported by the Landis & Gyr Foundation.

Ashley Catharine Smith (1989 – USA) is a Philadelphia-based artist working in photography, video, and fibers. Through the combination of these mediums, she creates visceral representations of intimacy in its many forms. She will present her past works and share her current work in progress, Fly away little bird, bring back lots of luck., a project that explores her Hungarian heritage and family history through objects, performance, and both real and fabricated records. Her residency was made possible by Moore College of Art & Design and the CERF+ grant.
