Štěpán Brož presents a continuation of his series dedicated to the legendary land of Szlarafia, focusing here on a minor chapter that explores predominantly urban sceneries of this landscape.
Out of the misty marshes surrounding the great river, the silhouettes of a city emerge in the dim evening light. Here and there, one of its shy inhabitants flickers past, quietly trying to cross the bridge from one bank to the other.
The title of the event, In-betweenness, refers to a general aspect of the residency as an opportunity to slow down and reflect on established routines amid the standard pace of life. In the broader sense in the context of the author's work is the title referring to the examination of central european national identities. As a metaphor for this state of in-betweenness, the author borrowed the motif of the bridge, which he incorporated into his latest works.
During his residency at AQB, Štěpán Brož started to develop a series of small-scale tempera paintings on paper, pursuing his long-standing interest in the themes of rest, weirdness and fiction. In the local context, he reflected on the specific history of Hungarian symbolism at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The outcome of his process will be presented in a one-day pop-up exhibition at AQB.
Štěpán Brož's residency is supported by the Visegrad Fund.

Masha Wysocka will discuss her residency project - A hűtő. It is a conceptual project that explores everyday life in Hungary from an unusual perspective: a fridge. Through photography, Masha aims to create a "collective portrait" of people living in Hungary. It is also a project about democracy, in which everyone (individuals from all walks of life and public organisations, businesses, etc.) is represented through the same image - the fridge.
Masha Wysocka is a Belgian-Spanish visual artist working at the intersection of writing, archives and research. She completed her master's degree in photojournalism and documentary photography at London College of Communication (University of the Arts London). She has exhibited internationally and received numerous awards and grants.
